Yoga is a discipline that is several thousand years old.

Its goal is to calm mental fluctuations, increase concentration and self-awareness, and achieve a state of stability, balance, and lasting well-being. Originating in India, it is now practiced worldwide by nearly 300 million people. (1) . Over the past three years, 10 million French people have practiced Yoga in France (2) .

The vast majority of practitioners are adults, but Yoga is increasingly practiced by children and adolescents.

Several studies have been carried out around the world to analyze the benefits for young people.

Below we have summarized the various benefits of all Yoga practices such as Asanas and Pranayama.

In addition to physical benefits, the regular practice of Hatha Yoga (with equilibrium, inverted and relaxation postures) and Vinyasa Yoga among adolescents:

  • Reduces stress and anxiety (3, 4, 5)

  • Reduces depression (4, 5, 6, 7)

  • Reduces anger (6, 8)

  • Reduces fatigue (9)

  • Increases academic performance (9)

  • Increases levels of awareness (4)

  • Increases empathy (5, 7)

  • Increases well-being and life satisfaction (5, 6)

  • Increases resilience (3)

The regular practice of meditation (mindfullness, body scan, breathing meditation) in adolescents:

  • Reduces stress and anxiety (13, 14, 15)

  • Reduces depression (14, 15)

  • Reduces distress (16)

  • Reduces distraction (16)

  • Reduces rumination (16)

  • Increases well-being (13)

In addition to physical benefits, regular Pranayama practices (Anuloma Viloma, Nadishodana, Kapalabhati, Bhastrika,  Savriti, Kukkuriya, Pranava Pranayama) among adolescents:

  • Reduces stress and anxiety (6, 10, 11)

  • Reduces depression (6)

  • Reduces anger (6)

  • Reduces heart and respiratory rate (10)

  • Reduces tension (10)

  • Increases academic performance (11)

  • Increases well-being (6)

  • Improves respiratory function (12)

The regular practice of relaxation (Yoga Nidra, somatic relaxation) in adolescents:

  • Reduces stress and anxiety (16, 17, 18)

  • Reduces distress (16)

  • Reduces depression (17)

  • Increases well-being (16)

  • Increases positive mood (16)

  • Enhances academic performance (18)

Yoga practices have been shown to be highly beneficial and necessary for young people. They are even more so for young exiles, who, in addition to experiencing their adolescence, experience their condition as exiles throughout their migratory journey.
